North Walshams Best Kept Secret
The Cockerel has been an important part of the history of North Walsham since as early as 1762. For over 200 years it served the locals as a public house, and now offers a complete dining experience
We provide a delicious variety of snacks and meals from traditional cream teas to traditional roasts and home made pies. Situated in the centre of North Walsham in Norfolk, you can sit in our spacious restaurant or a table in our courtyard garden to enjoy your meal.
At The Cockerel we cater for all with a variety of vegetarian meals and wheat and dairy free options available. A large amount of local produce is used in our meals. We also open on Friday and Saturday night with a fixed price bistro menu. The Cockerel is fully licensed. We stock a range of draught beers wines, local bottled real ales and spirits.
This building dates back to 1765 when it was probably workers cottages. Our garage once housed the North Walsham, Newsham fire engine in the days when human muscle worked the pumps. From 1830, there are records of the building as The Cock Inn Public House, which it remained until 1966 when it closed having sold just 51 barrels of beer in its final year. In 1979/1980, the building was converted into a tea room, retaining many original features, such as parts of the bar.
Mark and Claire Rushen took over The Cockerel in April 2007 and together with our friendly team we pride ourselves on offering good quality, reasonably priced food with great service in a welcoming atmosphere. Please note that much of our food is home made and is all cooked to order and during busy periods you may have to wait for your food. We do not serve fast food, but good food as quickly as we can!
If you have any food intolerances or special dietary requirements, please let us know. We do provide gluten free and diabetic foods.
As parents ourselves, we welcome children to The Cockerel and offer a separate menu for under 12s, plus colouring in, books and toys. Highchairs, booster seats and baby changing are available.
We are proud of what we do here at The Cockerel and we want you to have a great time while you are here, please let us know what we are getting right and what we could do better!
