A WEEKEND OF FUN AND ENTERTAINMENT
North Walsham Swimming Pool Association are once more pleased to announce that it is CARNIVAL TIME in North Walsham and we are hoping to offer you all a weekend of fun and entertainment on the 5th 6th & 7th July. On the Friday evening we shall be holding the CARNIVAL QUEEN COMPETITION DANCE and on the Saturday it will be the turn of the CARNIVAL KING, not forgetting the chance for two young attendants,the CARNIVAL PRINCE AND PRINCESS to be chosen at the Teddy Bears Picnic which will be hosted by MAGIC MAUDIE. Sunday will see the grand carnival procession when all the floats will parade through the town preceded by the WEAVERS MORRIS DANCERS performing in the Market Place. The parade will be led by the Smoke House Blues Marching Jazz Band. There will be all the fun of the fair on the park throughout the afternoon and we shall close the event with our ever popular OPEN AIR SONGS OF PRAISE, which will be led by the Salvation Army Band.
So come along and enjoy yourselves. We hope that we have provided a varied programme of events to please everyone and of course all proceeds go towards the Swimming Pool Fund. At long last this does not seem to be such a daydream and now that we have been offered a piece of land we are very hopeful that we shall soon be able to get things moving. So please give us your support both financially and morally.
Our committee consists of a very few dedicated believers in this cause and if we do manage to pull it off, all praise to their persistence and determination.

A Message from the Town Mayor
Since I was made Mayor on 28 May I have been asked several times what I hope to achieve during my year of office and I thought I would use this column to try to set out my aims for the year ahead. First, though, I thought I would tell you about the duties of the Mayor since most people dont really know! My primary duty is to act as chairman of the Town Council and be involved in all its activities, my other duties consist of representing the town and council at any function which I am asked to do both in and outside of the town and generally acting as an ambassador for the town.
This second set of duties means that during my year I get to meet most of the organisations and clubs which operate in the town and this allows me to get a very full picture of just what a busy place North Walsham is. This leads me to my first aim for the year which is to continue to help the good work already being done by the Town Centre Improvement Committee and to try to bring all the organisations in the town together even more to work for our town. Two great opportunities coming up for this are the plans to enter the town in the Anglia in Bloom competition next year and for some kind of millennium celebration in the town, which should bring everyone together right up to the millennium!
My second aim is to make the town much more aware of and involved in the workings of the Town Council. The Town Council does not have many powers but it does have influence over councils and other organisations that do and the more that the Town Council reflects the true wishes and aspirations of the people of the town the greater that influence will be. To this end and because we want to know what you all want the Town Council will be producing a questionnaire so that you can tell us. It will be delivered to every house in the town and I urge you all to fill it in and return it because the more replies we get the more accurate will be our knowledge of what you all actually want. A second idea is for the council to produce a regular newsletter for the town so that we can keep you informed of what we are doing.
My third aim is to try to find ways to help the young people in the town. The youth of the town tend to get a bad press due to the activities of a very small minority of them. I want to make sure that we celebrate the activities of the majority and to find out what they all want from our town and try to provide it for them.
All in all I am expecting to have a very busy year indeed but without hard work you achieve very little and I am totally committed to our town!

THE CHAIRMAN WRITES
It is most encouraging to be able to report a significant increase in the membership of the Chamber of Trade with more than 50 members currently enrolled.
The town centre is steadily improving with some of the empty shops now being occupied. The Town Councils Improvement Committee are to be congratulated for their arrangements with the hanging baskets this year.
Most businesses are reporting improved trading conditions which, if sustained, should lead to more of the vacant premises being occupied.
To all the residents of North Walsham and the surrounding villages I urge you to use the local facilities wherever they exist - if you do not, these facilities will soon cease to be there.
To all the shopkeepers and other business proprietors I ask that you provide the best possible level of service to retain your existing business and regain that lost to out of town competitors.

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN NORTH WALSHAM
After a year and a bit living in North Walsham, I can say that I feel very much at home here now, and this is a tribute as much as anything else to wealth of friendship and goodwill I have encountered from all sides since I have been here.
I believe in friendship and good humour and fun (the gospel of joy!) as well as courtesy and kindness, and so, it seems, do the people of this part of Norfolk, which I very soon found out to my delight. The habit of acknowledging people when they give you your right of way on the road - a typical example - seems an eminently Christian thing to do, and it is that kind of generosity of spirit that is evidenced in so much that goes on in the town year by year, from the Bluebell May Fair and the Carnival to the cheerful and devoted service of others undertaken week by week by so many willing members of voluntary societies and organisations (without whom the Welfare State would collapse in a heap).
This is a lovely town - lets make it even better!

A FIRST FOR ST JOHNS
A first in the seventy year history of North Walsham St John Division as Graham Green, age 19, was presented with the Grand Prior award at the North Walsham St John Quadrilateral Division Annual Inspection on 27th March by Ursula Lloyd Owen, a special friend for Norfolk.
Graham Green joined Cadets in March 1988 at the age of 11. He has since gained the twelve proficiencies required to achieve the Grand Prior Award, in areas such as caring for the sick, accident prevention, personal survival lifesaving, radio communications, map reading and DIY, completing the award in five years. The award requires much hard work on the part of the cadet and is the highest award achievable within St John Cadets. Graham has also helped to train other cadets enabling them to gain proficiencies towards the award.
Graham was promoted to a Cadet Sergeant in 1989, and became a Cadet Leader in 1992. Graham has since transferred to the Adult Membership in 1995.
North Walsham St John Quadrilateral Division Annual General Meeting
The Area Commissioner Mr C B A Lloyd Owen was the special guest at North Walsham Quadrilateral Divisions AGM on 11th April 1996. Mr Lloyd Owen enrolled six Cadets and presented 3 Super Badger Badges. 6 Cadets received Map Reading and Navigation proficiencies and 7 Brigade Members were presented with Caring for the Sick (Level 1) certificates. 1 Brigade Member was presented with the First Aid at Work Certificate. The North Walsham Divisons Team Shield was awarded to the Green Team and Mathew Pratt was presented with the Cadet of the Year Shield. Brigade Member Pat Stott was presented with a 12 year Long Service Good Conduct Medal and was warmly thanked for her contributions by Wayne Tritton, Divisional Superintendent. James Hunt was awarded a 3 year service stripe.
DIVISIONAL SUPERINTENDENTS REPORT.
1995, like 1994 was a year of increases: duties attended, casualties treated, funds raised, adult membership and patient transport.
Our Vice-President Jeanette Clack has had to resign after moving away and I would like to record my thanks for Jeanettes valuable contribution. I am pleased to welcome Gwen Smith as our new Vice-President and am grateful to Mark Green for agreeing to become our second Vice-President.
We continue to dedicate much time towards training for both the public and members - two more members have qualified as first aid trainers. Since the introduction of the Life Saver First Aid course, North Walsham has run 8 courses, and members have held short courses for various local groups.
We are pleased to note that the national lottery does not appear to have affected our ability to raise funds, our house-to-house and Flag Day collections raised almost 300 more than last year. I am grateful for the publics willingness to provide the division with financial support when there are so many other demands made upon them.
I would like to conclude by expressing my appreciation to everyone who has enabled the Division to complete another very busy year. To the members especially thank you for your hard work.
North Walsham Amenity society
The Amenity Society wish the Swimming Pool Committee every success for their Carnival weekend and continued success in their efforts to get a Swimming Pool in North Walsham.
The society meets quarterly in the Jubilee Room of the Community Centre and our next meeting is on Thursday July 11th when the speaker will be Mr Ron Fiske talking about the ancient Records of North Walsham. If you would like to come along you will be most welcome, although we do make a small charge of 50p to visitors.
Make a note of our autumn meeting which will be held on 10th October when the speaker will be Mr Graham Hayes of the Norfolk Coast Project.
The society have now produced a very useful booklet of Cycle Rides Around North Walsham price 1.20 and is available form the Angel Bookshop and the Tourist Information Centre. This is in addition to our Walks booklet published last year which is still on sale price 1. We hope that these books will encourage people to get out and about around North Walsham and perhaps widen their knowledge of the very pleasant area in which we live.
Our very small team of volunteers still tend the Station Approach keeping it weeded and planted with shrubs and bulbs and helping to make it a more attractive area.

SPECIAL EDITION
The Chamber of Trade, ever conscious of the need to raise funds for the towns Christmas Lights, will be supporting the Carnival with a stand on Sunday where a STRICTLY LIMITED, special edition number of Model T Ford Vans, manufactured for the Chamber to celebrate the 1996 carnival, will be available. We look forward to welcoming you all to our stand where you will also be able to purchase a unique stick or two of NORTH WALSHAMS VERY OWN ROCK.
GOOD WILL BRINGS PRACTICAL HELP
North Walsham Council of Churches recognised in 1987 that help was needed by elderly people without transport, their difficulties when hospital visits had to be made.
Dr James Rothwell responded to the call for someone to organize a help line.
With backing from the Churches he set up a steering committee with their representatives. A public meeting was held at the Community Centre in July 1988 that was attended by nearly 100 people.
The deputy Mayor Rev. Hugh Palmer, who chaired the meeting, said he was absolutely delighted at the response and the feeling of good will for the idea of a good neighbours scheme.
By November of that year it was ready to be launched.
People of good will were brought together to offer practical help.
With transport of the elderly and sick to the surgeries in town and the hospitals at Cromer and Norwich.
All done on a voluntary basis as the service is free but donations accepted if offered.
After seven years as Chairman and Central Organizer, Dr Rothwell felt it was time for him to step down.
Mr Paul Watts was willing to take over and has been doing the work since, he can be contacted on (01692) 403942. He has the support of a small team of helpers but is always in need of more drivers - they receive a mileage allowance.
Since it was started a great number of people have been, and are grateful for the help given to them by North Walsham (and District) Good Neighbours Scheme.
LIBRARY ACTICITIES
Summer Activities for Children at North Walsham Library.
Friday 26th July Norfolks Summer Reading Game starts for children 9 years and under. This year featuring Elmer the Elephant. Pick up a game from the Library and join Elmer on his journey through the jungle.
Saturday 10th August An all day cartoon workshop for children 10 years and over by childrens author and illustrator Peter Kavanagh. This will be held in the Community Centre. Materials will be provided, but there will not be any food or child minding facilities supplied in the lunch break. Tickets available from the Library from mid July, limited numbers.
Thursday 22nd August 11am - 12 noon in the Library Storytime for children under eight, Dave and the Tooth Fairy. A Dental Health promotion by Fiona Gray of the Norwich Community Health Partnership.
Wednesday 28th August 10.30 - 11.30 in the Library Elmer and Friends. Childrens activities for children under ten based on an elephant theme.

Focus on: The Tele Centre
40 years as a television engineer is the considerable experience Ian Lane is bringing to a new television shop opening in the precinct in North Walsham on the 4th July. Called the Tele Centre, Ian will be specializing in the sale of good quality second hand televisions and video recorders as well as an efficient repair service which is his hobby as well as his future living.
An old Pastonian, Ian has lived in North Walsham for 4 years, having moved from Norwich twelve years ago with an eight year spell in the Cromer area. He always had a passion for electronics and in the past has worked as Service Manager for various local firms as well as a period in London as Service Manager for a national T.V. rental company.
Ian is at present employed at H.P. canning although until 4 years ago he had always worked in the television repair industry, but was made redundant from Pennant Holidays when they went into receivership. There he was responsible for some 300 televisions for the Hire Fleet as well as sound and lighting equipment and aerial systems for three Holiday Camps.
His spare time is divided between repairing televisions, etc. for friends and family, working as a Tennants Representative for North Norfolk District Council and he has recently joined the Fund Raising Committee for Rebecca House, to raise money for people suffering from Alzheimers disease an illness his father, who died last October, suffered from.
Ian is married and his wife Marion works as a bar maid at the Melbourne Country Club and Chalet Park in North Walsham. She will be very involved in the running of the shop. He also has a 21 year old stepson Jonathan as well as a nine year old son, David who goes to Manor Road Junior School. Jonathan is interested in learning the aerial erection side of the business but at present works for Ross Foods at Westwick.
Ian believes there is a good market in the town for good quality low cost television sets and video recorders and aims to be available at all times to discuss the various attributes of each set and to stand by all sales with a parts and labour guarantee. As Ian says people want sets for kitchens, childrens rooms and conservatories as well as a state of the art set in the main living rooms, although these can also be provided if requested, again at a very reasonable price.
Another service people might like to take advantage of is the aerial system Ian can install which allows every television in the house to tune into Sky/terrestrial or video recorder, independent of each other anywhere in the home.
Come in on the 4th July, have a glass of wine with Ian and Marion and discuss the possibilities of them supplying your requirements in the television field either now or in the future.
THE BOOT IS ON THE OTHER FOOT
The Citizens Advice Bureau is there to help you, but at the moment, the boot is on the other foot, so to speak, and if we are to continue giving a good service to the public, we need you to help us!
Apart from the Manager and the Deputy Manager, the Bureau is staffed entirely by volunteers who have trained as advice workers. With three interview rooms and the telephone to man, ideally we need to have four or five volunteers on duty whenever the Bureau is open so as to avoid clients having to wait an unreasonably long time to be seen. The Bureau is open four days a week, so it does not take a mathematical genius to work out that we need to have a staff of about twenty volunteers to maintain a reasonable service and cover for holidays, sickness etc..
Over the last few months, several volunteers have left us, some retiring, others taking on other commitments. Sadly, one volunteer has died. We are now reduced to fourteen staff, so that it is difficult to man the Bureau to the level we would prefer without placing unfair demands on the remaining volunteers to do extra duty.
The work of a volunteer adviser is interesting and very varied. You never know what the next client is going to ask, whether it will be How do I get a copy of my grandmothers birth certificate? I bought this last week and its gone wrong already. Can I get a refund? Where can I find an NHS dentist? or I only got these court papers yesterday and the bailiffs will be coming tomorrow. What do I do? After training, you too will be able to answer these questions and many more! No two days in the Bureau are the same. So if you like helping people and have some time to spare, whatever your age or background, why not contact the Bureau and find out more about what being a volunteer adviser involves? Either call in or telephone and speak to the manager or the Deputy Manager.

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS!
The Gardeners Club is blooming in more ways than one.
Members have the pleasure and satisfaction of illustrated talks by speakers who are experts on various aspects of gardening at the Community Centre (Jubilee room) the third Thursday of each month at 7.30pm. People who enjoy gardening appreciate being with others to share their interests in flowers, plants, gardens, etc.
The club has social events throughout the year. We had lunch at the Beechwood Hotel in January, a garden party in the garden there has been arranged for August 15th at 6.30pm. There was a coach trip to Hampton Court Palace in March, and there will be an outing to Anglesey Abbey in August. An evening was spent with Jim LeGrice at the Garden Centre in May. We have an invitation to a members much loved garden in the Mundesley Road in June.
Our close links with Cromer and Hoveton and Wroxham Horticultural Societies, ensure joint meetings take place. We took part in the Inter-Society Quiz at Cromer in March, they will be coming to the joint meeting at the Community Centre in October.
There is to be a table top show and social on 18th July (you would be most welcome)

Garden Party for Childrens Hospice
What could be better than a traditional English garden party on a summers day? Nothing! So get yourself along to the Beechwood Hotels garden party which will be held between 2.00 and 5.00pm on Sunday 28 July in Cromer Road, North Walsham. Enjoy a cream tea on the lawn and the music of a string quartet, as well as a Tombola, crafts, gifts, home-made cakes and many more stalls. There is also a Grand Prize Draw with a star prize of two Air UK seats to Amsterdam and a second prize of an Autumn short break to the Johansens Recommended Wentworth Hotel in Aldborough, Suffolk. Partner at the hotel, Lindsay Spalding commented we have had tremendous support from the people and companies of North Walsham in organizing this event and we hope to emulate the donation we made to the hospice last time which was over 3000.

Focus on: PASTON BAKERY
Established 10 years ago, Paston Bakery moved to new premises early last year. They offer a wide selection of pies, cakes and traybakes all baked on the premises. Freshly filled rolls are available daily and telephone orders are welcome from anywhere in the North Walsham area, where a free delivery service can be arranged if required.

JUNIOR CHURCH
Junior Church meet on Sunday Mornings in the Clipperton Hall, behind the Congregational Church in Cromer Road. There are several groups aimed at different ages, Sparklers for the under 5s, Allstars for the 5 to 7s, Trailblazers for 8 to 11s and Lazer for the teenagers. Each group has its own activities of music, drama, crafts and events.
Junior Church is a Church especially for young people in North Walsham, where they can meet together in a safe but supervised environment. They can come along on their own if they are old enough, or someone can drop them off and collect them. We meet from 10.15am until around 11.45am on Sunday mornings and everyone aged 3 to 15 is welcome. If you want more information you can ring Barbara on 403983. We look forward to seeing you.

REFURBISHMENT UNDERWAY
Guess what ? The first phase in the refurbishment of the Old Saddlers Shop in North Walsham has commenced. As a result of concerted efforts by the fund raising team, an interest-free loan, a substantial benefit from a legacy and very generous donations, the Project Fund has now reached 7,000. Additionally, a grant of 1,000 has been given by the Norfolk Rural Community Council, subject to the Project Fund reaching 10,000. At the current level of available funding, the retiling of the roof and replacement of the door frame and windows becomes a practical proposition and work has commenced. Unfortunately, during the removal of tiles and roof timbers further problems were uncovered which due to the extra costs involved may result in a delay in the replacement of some of the windows. However, the fund raising team are not deterred and are forging ahead with further activities toward the projected target of 16,000. Meanwhile we offer our sincere thanks to all who have so generously contributed todate. In addition to the coffee mornings, quiz evenings, cream teas and car boot sales a Summer Fete is planned for Saturday 13th July at 2.30 pm. in the grounds of St. Nicholas Church. Invitations to participate have been sent to many activity groups in the town and together with Church Groups should provide an afternoon full of fun and entertainment in the very centre of our town. The town cricket club is back in the first division of the NatWest Bank Market Cross Sunday League, skipper Billy Batchelor lead his team of mainly youngsters with an added old un or two to the Division 2 championship during the 1995 season.
This season has seen little change in personnel and at present the club is sitting in a mid-table position.
For those of you who are new to the town or have revived their interest in cricket as a result of Englands new found winning streak, the club plays on the War Memorial Park with matches commencing at 2.15. If anyone is looking for a game or even a change of clubs then give Billy Batchelor a ring on 01692 404339.

North Walsham Runners are again organizing the Worstead Festival 5 mile road race and forms are available from Sportswise, 2 St Nicholas Court.
The runners meet on Monday and Fridays at 7.00pm at North Walsham Sports Centre. So if at present you are running on your own, come and join fellow runners, its more fun and improves your times.

Back Pain and Chiropractic
80% of people will at some point suffer from back pain. 20% of these are likely to suffer for more than 10 years, many believing that it is a problem that they will have to live with. In many of these cases Chiropractic treatment can provide an effective cure or relief from the symptoms of back pain.
Chiropractors specialise in diagnosing and treating disorders of the spine, joints, ligaments and muscles, and their effects on the nervous system. The term Chiropractic is derived from the Greek words chiero and praktos meaning treatment by hand or manipulation. After medicine and dentistry it is the largest primary health care profession in the western world.
Chiropractic is based on the fact that the body functions like a mechanical machine. For any machine to function properly, all of its components must be in working order, and if they are not, the effects can be far reaching. In the body, the spine is a very important mechanical structure, since as well as providing support, it also carries the spinal cord which divides to give a nervous supply to all areas of the body. The spine consists of 24 moveable vertebrae. If the joints between just one of these vertebrae become damaged, distorted or irritated the whole of the bodys mechanical structure and function could be affected. This can result in acute or nagging pain, not only in the back, but often in the neck, shoulders, arms and legs due to spinal nerve irritation.
On a patients first visit, the Chiropractor will take a thorough case history and carry out a full neurological and orthopaedic examination. X-rays may also be taken to check for any abnormalities or conditions which will show if another form of treatment would be more appropriate. Once these examinations are complete, the Chiropractor carries out a detailed analysis of how the individual bones, joints and muscles move, to identify the specific problem.
Treatment consists of gently unlocking the stiffjoints with skilled manipulation by hand, known as an adjustment. Quick, comfortable adjustments are used with just the right amount of pressure to restore proper function and mobility to the joints, thus taking the pressure off the damaged tissues and allowing them to repair themselves, as well as reducing any nerve irritation. The method of manipulation has been proven by medical research to be the most effective method for treating most mechanical joint pains. In addition massage and stretching techniques are used to facilitate healing.
Chiropractors do not just treat back pain and sciatica; neck pain, arm pain and headaches also respond well to treatment. From a simple sprain or strain, to the pain and stiffness of arthritis, or nerve irritation such as pain, pins and needles or numbness, Chiropractic is so often the answer.
